SMD package sizes
Chip sizes are imperial codes (0603 = 0.06″ × 0.03″) — beware the metric twin naming: an imperial 0603 and a metric 0603 (= imperial 0201) are different parts. Power ratings are typical for thick-film resistors.
| Package | Metric twin | Size (mm) | Typ. power | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 0201 | 0603 metric | 0.6 × 0.3 | 1/20 W | Phone-board territory — tweezer sneeze and it is gone |
| 0402 | 1005 metric | 1.0 × 0.5 | 1/16 W | Dense boards; still hand-solderable with patience |
| 0603 | 1608 metric | 1.6 × 0.8 | 1/10 W | The everyday hobby size |
| 0805 | 2012 metric | 2.0 × 1.25 | 1/8 W | Comfortable to hand-solder, easy to read markings |
| 1206 | 3216 metric | 3.2 × 1.6 | 1/4 W | Big pads, beginner-friendly |
| 2512 | 6332 metric | 6.3 × 3.2 | 1 W | Current-sense shunts and power resistors |
| SOT-23 | — | 2.9 × 1.3 | — | Small transistors and MOSFETs, 3 pins |
| SOIC-8 | — | 4.9 × 3.9 (1.27 mm pitch) | — | Op-amps, EEPROMs — the easiest IC to hand-solder |
| TSSOP | — | 0.65 mm pitch | — | Needs flux and a fine tip; drag-solder it |
| TQFP-32 | — | 7 × 7 (0.8 mm pitch) | — | The ATmega328P on an Uno SMD edition |
| QFN | — | pads underneath | — | Hot air or reflow only — no iron access to the pads |
